Ethan van Thillo has been involved with organizing Latino film festivals since he founded the University of California, Santa Cruz' Chicano Film Festival in 1989. After leaving Santa Cruz, Ethan was Program Assistant for the National Latino Communications Center in Los Angeles for a short while where he assisted in the coordination of a Chicano film series in Mexico City. He then went on to create San Diego's annual Latino film festival, San Diego Latino Film Festival (formerly Cine Estudiantil). In 1995, he was invited by Cine Acción in San Francisco to act as Festival Director, for their Third Annual Festival Cine Latino!, In addition to directing the film festival, Mr. van Thillo has curated over 20 programs at festivals and/or special events in Mexico City, Morelia, Las Cruces, Nuevo Laredo, San Antonio, Tijuana, Sacramento and San Diego. In 1999, Mr. van Thillo brought to San Diego the annual Cine Mexicano: Mexican Film Series. Cine Mexicano will be celebrating its' fifth anniversary in 2003. In 1999, Mr. van Thillo also created the non-profit organization Media Arts Center San Diego, for which he now is its' Executive Director. As Executive Director of MACSD, Mr. van Thillo has continued to develop new programs and services for the San Diego/Tijuana border region. One such program is MACSD's Teen Producers Project, which now educates over 300 middle school to high school youth from across San Diego County, media literacy and video production skills. |
