Poster Winner ’12

MEDIA ARTS Center San Diego is proud to announce the winner of the 2012 San Diego Latino Film Festival poster competition. Congratulations to Florie Parenthoux for her stunning design!

Florie Parenthoux is a 24-year old artist from Annecy, France. Ms. Parenthoux is currently completing a B.A. in graphic design and digital media from University of Greenwich in London. Her artistic influences include noted British graphic designer Vaughn Oliver and Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier. Ms. Parenthoux believes graphic design should be used to inspire and touch people’s emotions, something she tries to achieve with her own work.

Ms. Parenthoux discusses her thematic interests and artistic process: “Through my design I wanted to make the audience feel the heat and color of Latin American culture. I used paper and paint to realize the flowers, while the rest is only a bit of Photoshop image manipulation. I tried to avoid the expected, so the connections with cinema are not immediately obvious. But I used the typography “Tall Film” and also placed 16mm film in different parts of the poster. I really wanted to communicate the warm feel of Latin American culture by designing a colorful and romantic atmopshere.”

Nuvia Crisol Guerra is a visual artist from Paramount, California. “Chikle” was born and raised in San Diego and Baja California by a pair of brave and beautiful Mexican immigrants. He began screen-printing in 1995 while in high school and recently started experimenting with watercolors and acrylics in 2010. His work began as a response to a society and system that censors propoganda that is anti-war and anti-establishment. He takes a bold leap into flipping socio-political messages through designs that exhibit humor, diversity, language, and a myriad of other messages that either unnerve the viewer or challenge to see beyond the myths we are living today. Learn more about Chikle here.

Mario Chacon is an artist of deep spiritual and cultural orientation. His Native American Ceremonial life provides the underpinnings for much of his work, and the socio-political issues that spawned the “Chicano Movement” of the late sixties and seventies factor prominently in his artistic development. Nearly 40 years later these same issues remain at the heart of his people’s struggle and compel him to continue to create. Chacon’s acclaimed work has toured throughout California and the Southwest and has been published as book covers, musical CD jacket artwork, Theater program art, and a variety art and academic publications. Chacon has also served as a Community College Dean of Student Affiars. To learn more about Chacon click here.
