La Otra Conquista to open
Second Annual Cine Mexicano:
Mexican film series

San Diego, CA. Media Arts Center San Diego is proud to announce the Second Annual Cine Mexicano: Mexican Film Series to take place August 18 to November 30, 2000. This year's series will open with the highly acclaimed Mexican feature film La Otra Conquista / The Other Conquest. La Otra Conquista will be screened for one week only beginning August 18 and ending August 24th. La Otra Conquista and the entire Cine Mexicano: Mexican Film Series will take place at Mann Hazard Center 7 movie theaters located in Hazard Center in San Diego's Mission Valley.

La Otra Conquista (Mexicano, 105 min., 1998) is written, directed and edited by Salvador Corrasco, produced by Alvaro Domingo and stars Damián Delgado, José Carlos Rodríguez, Elpidia Carrillo, and Iñaki Aierra. La Otra Conquista tells the story of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, but more importantly, the high price the Aztec culture paid, both spiritually and materialistically, at the hands of the Spanish. Writer/director Salvador Corrasco thought it was time to tell the other side of the story, the ones most of us don't learn about in high school.
Premiering in Mexico in April 1999, La Otra Conquista became the highest grossing Mexican dramatic film ever released in that country, a true cultural phenomenon attracting an audience of over one million spectators
during its four-month run.

Set in the 16th century, this reenactment of the Spanish conquest over the Aztec Indians depicts one native&Mac226;s resistance to convert to Christianity. The infamous massacre at the Great Temple of Mexico leaves the sacred grounds resembling a mass burial lot of Aztec priests and nobility. Topiltzin is the illegitimate son of Moctezuma and escapes from the massacre alive. He is eventually captured by Spanish troops and placed under the care of Friar Diego, whose mission is to convert natives into "civilized" Christians and impose the ways of the New Order.

Series Curator, Fred Salas, worked hard to secure La Otra Conquista for the upcoming Cine Mexicano series. "The film has been playing to packed houses throughout the country and we didn&Mac226;t want San Diego audiences to be left out. This film typifies the wonderful new wave of cinema that Mexico has to offer these days. We our honored to provide San Diego with an exclusive one-week engagement of the film."
