"American Family" Celebration!

Join cast members of the acclaimed PBS drama American Family, PBS’ at the 2004 SDLFF as they present the San Diego premier of episode #1 from the second season and talk about working on this exciting series, created by Academy Award nominated writer/director Gregory Nava (El Norte, Selena). The acclaimed drama series chronicles the daily struggles and triumphs of the Gonzalez family in East L.A. The second season takes a look at major historical events of the last century as seen through the eyes of the Gonzalez family. From their ancestors’ participation in the Mexican Revolution in the early 1900s, to son Conrado’s participation in the 2003 Iraq War, to the daily struggles of modern-day life, the Gonzalez family eagerly seeks to live the American dream. American Family stars Edward James Olmos, Constance Marie, Yancey Arias, Jesse Borrego, Patricia Velasquez, Kate del Castillo and Raquel Welch, with special guest stars Esai Morales, Lynn Whitfield and Rachel Ticotin, and special appearances by Sonia Braga. Ages 9 and up!

A superbly brilliant comedy about life in a norteño town. The fabulous Tiaré Scanda (
Sin Dejar Huella) stars as Constitución Gamal a woman who runs a local dressmaking shop with her twin sister Gloria (Erika de la Llave). When their cousin’s wedding day approaches, the sisters must decide which one will go and which one will mind the store. Sparks fly and sibling rivalry ensues when handsome local rancher Oscar Segura enters the picture. An excellent script and energetic directing make this one of the most refreshingly funny Mexican movies in recent years. Based on the 1994 book by Daniel Sada, who also co-wrote the script. Ages 9 and up!

Jose Luis Orozco: Cantamos y Aprendemos!

José-Luis Orozco (Bilingual Educator, Children's Author, Recording Artist) will be screening his new video -
Cantamos y Aprendemos. Mr. Orozco will also perform a brief musical set for the families attending this special event, This video introduces children to the Spanish language and to the rich tradition of Latin American children's music. Educator, author and singer, José-Luis Orozco has taught generations of children, teachers and parents the importance of using Latin American songs and games to preserve the rich culture and language of the Spanish-speaking world. This vibrant video is filled with color, animation, and Latino flavor that will motivate all children to learn. José-Luis Orozco is an author and recording artist whose work draws upon the rich heritage of the Spanish-speaking world. Through his music José-Luis Orozco has sought to expose a wider audience to Spanish language children's traditions and promote Latin American culture. It is his desire to pass on this heritage to the children of today so that they may take pleasure in passing it on to the children of tomorrow. Harry Potter, move over -- Oscar’s magic stone is here! This family adventure begins when Oscar’s mother has to go away to a remote island in the beautiful Venezuelan Caribbean. She is an anthropologist searching for antique treasures for a museum. Oscar loves adventure and flying and decides to find her with his sister and their dog. Thus begins a road trip adventure as they run into some unusual people along the way: villains, good folks, a magician and a woman with magical powers. The fearless travelers make it through jungles and islands, take airplane rides and enjoy many adventures in a story of love and magic. Age 7 and up.The screening includes the short film
El Mundo de los Onqui Tonqui.
