New Chilean Directors Showcase

The 19th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival Presents:

New Chilean Directors Showcase

Presented by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Relations (DIRAC) with the support of M-Appeal

From Romania to South Korea, it seems like every year a new pocket of filmmaking talent emerges in the most unsuspecting locale. This year San Diego Latino Film Festival is proud to present a special showcase of work by new Chilean directors, whose work is equal parts diverse, vibrant and complex.

03:34: Terremoto en Chile

dir. Juan Pablo Ternicier
(2011, 100 min., Chile, Spanish w/ English subtitles)

Set immediately before, during, and after the devastating earthquake that struck Terremoto, Chile in 2010, Juan Pablo Ternicier’s sprawling film is a true mosaic. Following multiple different characters traversing a broken landscape plagued by crime, looting, and aftershocks, 03:34: Terremoto en Chile adds up to a stirring collective experience about survival and hope in desperate times. Impeccably crafted and emotionally resonant, this is epic filmmaking at it’s finest. Screened as part of the New Chilean Directors Showcase.

La Mujer de Ivan

dir. Francisca Silva
(2010, 88 min., Chile, Spanish w/ English subtitles)

Since she was a littler girl, Natalia (Maria de los Angeles Garcia) has lived as a prisoner in Ivan’s (Marcello Alonso) house. Despite the disturbing situation, a strange familial connection has developed between the two, which is challenged when Natalia experiences a sexual awakening that gives her unprecedented power she’s never felt before. In this searing and tense drama, a single household is transformed into an amoral battlefield where the cost of freedom may just be new found love. Screened as part of The New Chilean Directors Showcase.

Mi Ultimo Round

dir. Julio Jorquera Arriagada
(2011, 110 min., Chile, Spanish w/ English Subtitles

Presented by the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Relations with the support of M-Appeal

This knockout debut from Julio Jorquera is a study in masculinity that explores the relationship of a young man and an older champion boxer.  Set to an evocative acoustic score, this film moves briskly through an intense romantic and tragic affair between two men.Writer/Director Julio Jorquera coaxes brilliantly natural and lived-in raw performances from his two lead actors, making Mi Ultimo Round/My Last Round a tender and unforgettable love story about the devastating costs of living a life in secret.  Sunday, March 11 @ 8:30 PM – Special screening w/director Julio Jorquera

Musica Campesina

dir: Alberto Fuguet
(2011, USA, 100 min., English and Spanish w/ English subtitles)

Alejandro Tazo (Pablo Cerda), a musician from Chile who dreams of making in big as a country singer, arrives in Nashville only to find economic hardship and creative frustration. Surrounded by artists and drifters, Alejandro immerses himself in a community brimming with the possibility of artistic expression. Director Albert Fuguet gives this complex drama a sense of urgency without suffocating the unique characters, creating a world where success and failure stand side-by-side. Screened as part of The New Chilean Directors Showcase.
