Cantinflas, Siempre Cantinflas
During his lifetime Mario Moreno inspired artists Diego Rivera, Miguel Covarrubias, and Rufino Tamayo, enjoyed enormous popular appeal, broke box office records and provoked discussion of issues of class and identity in Mexico. This program celebrates the artistic and cultural legacy of one of Mexico's greatest film personalities - Mario Moreno. This entertaining will include biographical information tracing the development of Mario Moreno/Cantinflas from the carpas of Mexico City to his triumph as a national icon and international film star. Through a discussion of six film clips the audience will examine the linguistic acrobatics, social commentary, and cultural contributions of Mario Moreno.

Maria Bonita: La Leyenda de Maria Felix
Love her or hate her, María Félix continues to be the face of Mexican Cinema. Although she has not made a film in over thirty years, La Doña still captures the imagination of the Mexican public. Outspoken, caustic, absurd, vain, she is an international celebrity of high drama and startling presence. Her life is the story of twentieth century Mexican film. This fun presentation will examine this legend of sensuality and powerful femininity celebrated in song by her ex-husband Augustin Lara and painted by Diego Rivera and her current husband. Discussion will follow the showing of five film clips from her 48 films and recorded interviews.

Dolores del Rio: Belleza Mexicana
A star in both Mexico and the U.S., Dolores del Rio played a wide variety of roles - from a Brazilian socialite to Elvis Presley's mother - all the while remaining her photogenic self. Collaborating with Emilio "El Indio" Fernandez, Gabriel Figueroa, and Pedro Armendariz she epitomized the female lead of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. This entertaining student presentation will examine del Rio's contribution through film clips and biographic background information.

Tin Tan: Tan Talentoso
Actor, singer, dancer, composer, Tin Tan (German Valdes) ignited the screen with his energetic debut in 1943. Strongly influenced by the Pachuco Movement of the southwest, he projected the knowing adaptability of the cultural border crosser. This presentation focuses on the many talents of Tin Tan, the fast talker, the lover, the comic, and the dandy as revealed in his films and songs.
