In a modern Latin American police state, everyday corruption has entered the digital domain. The murder of an important trade union leader seems at first to be just another ordinary crime of passion, one of the hundreds that occur every day in Mexico City. But of course, nothing is as it seems, and the murder soon turns out to be linked to a widespread money laundering operation. Marco Antonio, an unemployed reporter, is asked to write a major article about the crime. At the same time, Magaña, a mediocre lawyer, is hired to defend Claudia Jimenez, who is accused of the crime. But who is making these requests? Both men are led by a "voice" that spies, gives advice and issues commands via phone and e-mail. While they work on their assignments, the reporter and the lawyer slowly discover that they are caught up in a sprawling web of power and intrigue and that the parallel lines of their respective investigations will never cross.
